For us, there's the FTP :P

For the rest, there'd be some browser(s) on the Installation Media, to choose and install from?

It sounds to me like milking a rich cash cow!

One Layman Q: If the OS wouldn't have a browser at all, how would the user get onto the net to download a browser of his/her choice? :|

Dude don't think anyone likes Microsoft just because they think that a certain lawsuit against them is selfish.

Opera is actually trying to be selfish here. They don't even bother about the standards compliance, they just want to throw IE from it's top place. If they had just said that they want microsoft to follow the industry standards then I would have been definitely supporting the cause.

I support going against the non-standard part, but I really don't think Microsoft would agree putting in something thats not, well, Microsoft. I do support something heading towards or being a leading symbol of standard stuff but what they're asking here is not really logical, they should have known Microsoft wouldn't do such a thing.

IE would probably never be standards-compliant. What they ought to do is to show the acid test results on a mass media between browsers, that'd really impact the shares they have.

Still, I don't know much about the EU and its limits, but I sure do think that Opera would lose this one. It looks futile.

Btw, thanks a lot for leaving a comment here, you've got a nice blog there. :)

Yes, Opera is using the EU for its own ends, but did it have a choice? Shafted for years for being the most standards compliant browser, is that what you want? That has been the case with Opera. Broken pages, broken sites, unsupported, because those sites had to work in IE, be totally nonstandards compliant, then spoilt further if some developer also gave Firefox support, breaking the pages still more, none of which would have happened if the correct code was written. But, if the correct code was written, IE would not display it, so who cares about the small guys, let them go to hell, let us code for IE. Is that a fair marketplace. I think all right meaning people should go out and support Opera in this one because it would mean freedom from bad code and return of the best browsers actually rendering correctly, and not getting shafted because of it. I do hope that IE loses the case badly, really. Because that would mean better browsing from my mobile, from my Linux box as well as from XP. Otherwise, stay silent, and get your arse further owned by Microsoft.

@Sriram - Not many would care for a browser with sub 5% visitor market share. No, the world isn't as wise as you think you are. :)

About standards, IE 7.0 was quite an improvement from 6.0, which was stuck for way too long for its own good. It probably would never pass ACID 2 either while Opera and Firefox 3 do it easily. But that's not the point here at all.

You just don't have a clue how frustrating it can get when you don't have basic tools bundled in an OS (Out of box experience as some call it). And Microsoft is a private company, pretty much as what Opera is too. Do you really think they give a damn? Why did Opera not complain the same to USA too? Just EU? Safe at home.

You use Windows and speak of Microsoft being monopolistic, how many times does one hear that in a life time?

Am not biased against Opera at all, since I use it too. Its pretty cool in its ideas. And Opera Watch, its got only one good point, about Microsoft fixing its browsers to something more acceptable. While that's far away, its probably the right thing to point and file complaints against. Not against unbundling a browser itself. Opera's just using the EU to its own ends.

So the next time you start your Windozes, I guess you'd like it to ask you each time (As UAC already does) that you wanna start "Opera (Y/N), IE (Y/N), Firefox (Y/N)." ? That's just great.

Actually Sriram what he said is quite right. I mean Opera never actually filed the law because IE was not following the standards. They did this just so that they can get microsoft to stop bundling IE with Windows and not have it entangled within its roots. Since that would definitely popularize Opera and others but opera especially. The positive outcome is that it even talks about IE not following the standards, it is their just to justify their selfish meaning.

About different browsers when you install PC talk; well the thing is many people who buy new PCs have no idea whats the difference between IE or any other browser. But IE is deep rooted into the registries of Windows so if you un-install it many things stop working. Their should be a way where this never happens rather than having options when installing.

Do u knw how many sites dont have opera compatibility?? Opera is probably the best implementation of so called web standards and ironically lotsa sites just deny to open in opera...

"The issue of standards is seen as important because if all Web browsers do not use the same standards, Web site developers are likely to design their Web sites to work with the most widely-used browser, which is Internet Explorer"

Is it opera's fault tat IE doesnt pass teh Acid2 Test??its high time Microsoft abided by some rules and give up its monopoly...

It would be great if u re able to choose between diff browsers wen u install an OS...just my belief..
